Things to look for in a new CD player

Most CD players will require a decent period of running-in before it can extract the optimum amount of detail and balanced presentation.

Your aim, however, should be a player which can handle the punch of pop bands and artists, the detail and lamblast of large scale orchestral works, and the close toned notes of chamber music.

Some important points to consider. Will you require support for a digital output, what kind of sound do you want your system to play, and to make sure your source unit is balanced with your amplifier and speakers.

Design

A front panel with a minimum of clutter, more advanced functions relegated to the remote.

Buttons which feel positive to the touch, and a solid and steady disc loading action.

An LCD display which is clear to read, with clearly legible CD text information.

An easy to reach headphone output, with it's own volume control.

A comprehensive and balanced array of sockets; analogue connections, alongside electrical digital and optical outputs.

Pitch control, so that amateur musicians can play along with their favourite music.

Outer skin made from silver or copper, or a material which protects the internal components from outside vibrations and interference.

Performance

A good level sonic performance.

Refinement at high frequencies.

Bass that is defined, taut and rhythmic.

A smooth level of refined treble.

Can handle instrumentals and vocals with an emotional delivery.
